Boise Area City Nature Challenge to be held April 29

City of Boise recently issued the following announcement.

Boise Area City Nature Challenge

A global effort to celebrate and document biodiversity across the globe by discovering and recording the species found in our yards, neighborhoods, parks, city streets and open spaces.

The Boise Area City Nature Challenge is part of the larger (450 community) event taking place globally.

HOW TO PARTICIPATE

STEP 1: Mark your calendar to get outside April 29-May 2. Take photos of wild organisms.

STEP 2: Download the iNaturalist app and create an account.

STEP 3: Take photos of WILD plants, animals, and/or fungi anywhere in Boise or Garden City. (No people, pets, or potted plants please).

STEP 4: Upload your observations (photos) to the iNaturalist app or website to share with the iNaturalist community.

STEP 5: Help identify species or learn more as your discoveries are identified by the community May 3-8.

City Nature Challenge Hull’s Gulch Hike

All are welcome to join us for this hike in Hulls Gulch as we collect observations of plants and wildlife for the City Nature Challenge. Bring your smartphones or cameras and help us snap pictures along with your guide. Please dress to be outdoors and bring your own snacks and water. Hike will be 2 hours long but is adaptable for all ages. We will meet in front of the Foothills Learning Center 3188 Sunset Peak Road.

City Nature Challenge Hyatt Hidden Lakes Reserve Bioblitz

Join WaterShed staff and experts for this free fun family event as we explore the vast biodiversity of Hyatt Hidden Lakes Reserve, as part of a global City Nature Challenge. Work alongside local experts and environmental educators to document the plants, insects, birds and other organisms that call this unique park home!

City Nature Challenge Marianne Williams Park Bioblitz

Marianne Williams Park (3451 E. Barber Valley Drive)

Join us as we document the biodiversity in Marianne Williams Park as part of the 2022 Boise Area City Nature Challenge.  During this all-day event, we will explore and document the birds, mammals, plants, invertebrates, and more found throughout this unique park.  Experts will be available throughout the day to answer questions and discuss some of the species in the park.  Volunteers are welcome to join in for all or any portion of the day. We will kick-off the morning with a structured exploration of birds in the park from 8:00 - 9:30 am.  From 10:00 - 11:30 am a local plant expert will provide a guided tour of the plants that make their homes throughout the park.  The afternoon from 12:30 - 3:30 will be focused on insects and other invertebrates that inhabit the park.

City Nature Challenge at the Diane Moore Nature Center

Join the Intermountain Bird Observatory on April 30th for a walk through the Diane Moore Nature Center to collect species observations around the new side-channel! Be sure you have the iNaturalist app downloaded on your phone, and that you’re signed up for an account before you arrive.

Library! at Bown Crossing

The Library! at Bown Crossing will have a family take home kit focusing on the City Nature Challenge the week of April 17th to the 22nd.  The Grab and Go kit will include information about the iNaturalist app, the City Nature Challenge, examples of the types of plants and animals participants should look for versus the domestic types that can’t be used, and other City Nature Challenge events.
