FOIA Request to College of Western Idaho Regarding Chinese National Students on June 4, 2025.
As part of our commitment to transparency and accountability in governmental affairs, Treasure Valley Times has submitted a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request to the College of Western Idaho. The request seeks detailed information about Chinese National students currently enrolled at the institution.
The request specifically asks for documents or lists that provide the number of current students who are Chinese Nationals, along with their respective departments of study. If specific student names are protected under privacy laws, we have requested that this information be redacted or provided in aggregate form. Additionally, we are seeking information on scholarships awarded to these students, including the amount and source of each scholarship.
Furthermore, we have requested details on any scholarships granted by organizations affiliated with the Chinese Scholarship Council. In addition to student-related data, we are also interested in understanding how the university monitors its students—particularly Chinese Nationals—to safeguard its Intellectual Property and other confidential information.
This request is made on behalf of Treasure Valley Times and The Coalition Opposing Governmental Secrecy, a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting transparency within governmental institutions. As members of the media, we believe access to public records is crucial for holding public institutions accountable and ensuring transparency for the public.
We have also requested a fee waiver for this FOIA submission due to our role in gathering and disseminating news as media professionals. We look forward to receiving the requested information and will continue our efforts to provide comprehensive coverage on matters affecting local governance and public interest.
